August 15, 2024—The Miller Art Museum in downtown Sturgeon Bay is pleased to announce the public programming schedule for the 2024 Al & Mickey Quinlan Artist Residency Program. Led by 2024 resident artist Jessica Harvey, the series will kick off with a Deep Listening Experiment on Sunday, August 25 from 3 – 5 pm, which will be followed by additional opportunities for the public to engage with Harvey, who will be in residence at the Dome House through September 29, 2024. A critical component of the residency program, now in its fourth year, is education and public engagement. As part of the experience, the resident artist actively engages the community through the development of a series of programs designed in partnership with the Miller Art Museum.
“This requirement of our program advances the museum’s mission to expand its role in education and to shape and influence the artistic development and growth of artists in the area,” says Elizabeth Meissner-Gigstead, executive director.
Harvey is an artist and writer whose work explores the fractures of bodies, place, and history. Digging through public and private archives, she conducts long-term investigations of ruptures within natural, historical, and personal events, paying close attention to the interpretation of facts, which often changes based on the narrator. Using photography, video, sound, and archival resources, the images and installations she makes act as a catalyst for the exploration of the psychology that one attaches to memory and place, putting a particular emphasis on time and the labor of care. She often makes work using intimate aspects of physical bodies without revealing the actual human form in its entirety. Bone fragments, human hair, heartbeats, and the sounds of daybreak act as inspiration to illustrate the stories and rituals tied to death and living. Her work at the Dome House will advance a series she began during the pandemic called ‘Daybreak.’
“Jessica’s exploration of photography, video, and sound will offer our community an exciting way to engage with the artist and her work, the structure, and the surrounding landscape,” Meissner-Gigstead continued.
UPCOMING PROGRAMS
Deep Listening Experiment Sunday, August 25 | 3 – 5 pm
The public is invited to join Harvey on a sonic exploration of the Dome House and its grounds. Utilizing the deep listening ethos of Pauline Oliveros, participants will further explore what it means to “walk so silently that the bottoms of your feet become ears.” What happens when we slow down and listen to our outer and inner worlds? What does a sound feel like? Look like? Where does our attention take us? We will use prompts to create our own deep listening maps, scores, and writing that allow us to listen with a multitude of senses. All are welcome, and these deep listening experiments can be adjusted to accommodate a range of ages and abilities. Materials for writing and drawing will be provided.
Artist Open Studio | Saturday, August 31, 11 am – 4 pm
Deep Listening Experiment at Whitefish Dunes State Park | Saturday, September 7, 10 am – 12 pm; Location: Whitefish Dunes State Park

The Miller Art Museum’s artist residency program was first launched in 2021 and is an application-based program that invites early to mid-career-level Midwest artists to Wisconsin’s Door Peninsula to reside for 8 weeks at the 5,073-square-foot Dome House and allows artists to focus in the areas of creative development, fellowship, sense of place, learning, and community.
